It's Echinocactus xeranthemoides (treated usually, incorrectly IMO as a ssp. of polycephalus).

Great blog! The recent post on the new Loph species is fantastic!

peter b
Tempe AZPeter Breslinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15466530226652452872noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9906682.post-1133845022572580012005-12-06T05:57:00.000+01:002005-12-06T05:57:00.000+01:00Yes those awefull glochids.I have several in my fi...Yes those awefull glochids.I have several in my fingers right now ;-)

The Saguaros usally start to bloom late may though june.

I've always wanted to graft a saguaro seedling on pereskiopsis just for fun. I might try to graft a fish hook barrell cactus onto pereskiopsis. I collected a couple thousand seeds last month from the barrell cactus all over my neighborhood. Each pod must have at least a thousand seeds.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9906682.post-1133660842486730542005-12-04T02:47:00.000+01:002005-12-04T02:47:00.000+01:00Another similarity is the ubiquitous glochids ;-) ...Another similarity is the ubiquitous glochids ;-) Anderson includes Pereskiopsis in the Opuntioideae subfamily – a standpoint confirmed by DNA sequencing research by R. Although it does get quite hot in the summer, the winters are great. Thanks for sharing those pics, they're great.

It's interesting how Opuntia sprouts with leaves, that is another reason why I think
Pereskiopsis is a distant relative of Opuntia.
